The Five Most Popular Posts of May 2012The most popular post each month usually surprises me, and May was no different. The most popular post in May was related to the tragic death of beautiful Indiana teenager Tori Swoape.
I was in a waiting room a few weeks ago, and a very nosy twenty-something queen was asking me about myself. I talked a little about this blog, and he asked what I wrote about. When I said gay-centric politics, LGBT civil rights, religion, bullying, and corporate responsibility, he said the blog "sounds boring."
I didn't know that he was looking at my blog on his iPhone as we were speaking.
He muttered "you blog about gay suicides. I know all about that honey - how depressing."
I tried to explain that I don't blog about gay suicide, I write about teens who harm themselves - gay straight and questioning, and that most of them have been scarred by bullying, and other external forces, and that some have committed suicide.
While he continued to read my blog, with his face glued to his iPhone screen, he quietly announced that "I won't be reading your blog, it's way too depressing and it hits a little too close to home." With that pronouncement, he took his iPhone and quickly put it in his pocket, while giving me a look that was more "how could you" than "good for you."
I acknowledge that I'm very passionate about my point of view, and I know that sometimes the bad news outweighs the good. I don't keep track of happy versus sad stories, and perhaps I should. What do you think?
If you have an opinion about the subjects I write about, please feel free to give me some feedback. I get lots of feedback from anti-gay extremists, but that's not the constructive dialogue I'm looking for. If you'd like me to write more about a specific subject, or less, let me know. I look forward to hearing from you!
