UPDATE: The Delaware State Senate passed HB 75 by a vote of 12 - 9, which legalizes gay marriage. They are the 11th state to embrace marriage equality. BRAVO Delaware!
Dover, Delaware --- Reuters is reporting that the Delaware state Senate has scheduled a vote on their gay marriage legislation for today, May 7th, 2013.
Delaware’s House of Representatives passed HB 75, the marriage equality bill, two weeks ago 23-18.
If the gay marriage legislation passes in the state Senate, Governor Jack Markell has said that he will sign the bill, and Delaware will be the 11th state to allow same-sex marriage.
There are 21 state Senators in Delaware, consisting of 13 Democrats and 8 Republicans. Eleven Senators must support gay marriage for the bill to pass. Seven Republican state Senators have registered their opposition to gay marriage, with one GOP Senator undecided. There are at least 8 Democrats in the Senate who have voiced their support for marriage equality, and the position of the other 5 is currently unknown.
Fasten your seatbelts, the road to marriage equality in Delaware might be a bumpy ride.
