About Roy Steele
Roy Steele is a gay male blogger, writer, queer activist, equality advocate, and anti-bullying evangelist.
He led a successful boycott of American retail stores that were financing anti-gay hate groups through affiliate marketing schemes. The boycott received extensive coverage from major media organizations. Reporter Michelle Goldberg wrote about the boycott for Newsweek, in an article entitled “Christian Group’s New Gay War,” and The New York Times documented the campaign in “Retailers get heat for sales that generate anti-gay aid.”
Anti-gay former Arkansas governor and perennial Republican presidential candidate, Mike Huckabee, called Roy “an economic terrorist” because his boycott campaign resulted in nearly 200 major retail organizations severing ties with the Christian Values Network and the Charity Give Back Group, for funneling money to anti-gay organizations like the Family Research Council and Focus on the Family.
Roy is a northern New Jersey native, who majored in English and Political Science, at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He trained as a musical theatre actor at the Guildford School of Acting - University of Surrey, in Guildford, Surrey England, and made his professional debut in London’s West End at the Royal Shakespeare Company's Barbican Theatre.
He was a Financial Analyst in the private sector for many years, and has worked as an actor, voice-over artist, singer, political meteorologist, itinerant nag, and urban gadfly throughout his life. He’s a world traveler, and a lifelong Mets and NY Giants fan, who avidly follows the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in football and basketball.
