Chicago: Northalsted Market Days & Walmart

Chicago, IL: This past weekend was the Northalsted Market Days Street Fair, the largest annual street fair in the midwest. The street fair takes place in the Boystown section of Lakeview , and this predominantly gay event celebrated it's 30th birthday. Musical performers included San Francisco native and Glee star Darren Criss, gay icon Gloria Gaynor, and former American Idol contestant Frenchie Davis. Over 300,000 attendees were expected to attend the 2 day event.

One of the companies front and center at the Fair was Walmart, the Bentonville, Arkansas retail giant. I am awarding Walmart a Gold Star for embracing diversity. Walmart often gets lots of publicity for what some people think is being on the wrong side of social justice issues, and I think it's just as important to point out when corporations embrace inclusion and diversity, and support our community. Recruiting potential employees at Northalsted Market Days sends a message loud and clear, that discrimination and intolerance will not be accepted at Walmart. I have to applaud them for that.
