Politics: House Republicans Pass “Let Women Die” Bill

Republicans in the US House of Representatives passed legislation, called the Protect Life Act, that does nothing to protect life at all. The Protect Life Act prohibits women from  buying any health insurance plans that cover abortion under the Affordable Care Act. In addition, the bill allows hospitals to discriminate against pregnant women, by denying them care, in life threatening emergencies, when an abortion might save their life.

I make no secret of the fact that I think it’s criminal for any government or legislature in our country, whether on the local, state, or federal level, to legislate choice - when it comes to a woman’s body, including her reproductive organs.

What this particular legislation does, is allow hospitals to commit cold blooded murder. By denying medical treatment to a pregnant woman in need of emergency care, which historically our country has never done before, the Republican party says that’s OK to treat women that way - but that’s NOT OK as far as I’m concerned.

In the Huffington Post, they reported that my Congresswoman, Nancy Pelosi, said the following at a press conference prior to the vote:

"When the Republicans vote for this bill today, they will be voting to say that women can die on the floor, and health care providers do not have to intervene," Pelosi said at a press conference. "It's just appalling. This is a health issue, and it falls right in there with a lot of other initiatives that they had coming up on the floor about clean air, clean water, mercury -- you name it."

"I can't even describe to you the logic of what it is that they are doing," Pelosi said. "I just know that you'll see a large number of women on the floor today fighting for women's health issues as well as to point out how savage this is about withholding care for a woman because of this legislation.”

On a day when Congress should have been passing a jobs and infrastructure bill, they chose to vote for a bill that has no chance of passing the Senate. They willfully chose to advance federal legislation that sanctions murder, even though the GOP knew that the bill faced a likely veto.

The Republican Congress does not care about anyone but the wealthy. These GOP lawmakers think it’s cool to discriminate against women, the LGBT community, union workers, the middle class, latinos, and basically anyone who isn’t wealthy, white and a male.

They will find out how cool it is to mistreat and disrespect people, when they are collecting unemployment checks after the 2012 elections.

The 2012 elections can’t get here fast enough!
