US Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), an out lesbian politician from Wisconsin, was elected to the US Senate yesterday. She is the first openly gay American ever elected to serve in the Senate, and the Senator-elect is the first woman elected to represent Wisconsin in the upper chamber. She has represented Wisconsin’s second Congressional district in the House since 1999.

The victory is historic.
Baldwin is both the first woman from Wisconsin elected to the U.S. Senate, and she becomes the first openly gay person to serve in the Senate.
"Tonight, at the end of a long and hard-fought campaign, we have won a huge victory for Wisconsin's middle class," Baldwin told an ebullient crowd of more than 1,000 support ers in Madison.Congratulations to Senator-elect Tammy Baldwin, I know that she will make our community proud.
She said she's honored to be the first female senator from Wisconsin and the first openly gay senator in American history.
"I didn't run to make history, I ran to make a difference," she said. "A difference in the lives of students worried about debt and seniors worried about their retirement security."
